Project Brief

Public buses are integral to the transport services of a city. And yet, not much technology is used to provide information to commuters in Indian buses. In this project, we need to design a bus information system that can be deployed for the BEST Bus service of Mumbai. It should encourage people to use the bus infrastructure, inform the commuter about bus time and the crowd of the bus, so he/she can make optimum choices. What other information do the commuters need and what is the best way to provide it to them? How else can we optimize with available infrastructure

Design Process

Contextual Inquiry

We (3 team members) decided to gather user data through conducting interviews by visiting bus tops and Buses. We tried to understand commuters and their problems by taking their interviews and observing them. .

19 Participants
12 Males
07 Females

Age Group: 16-75

  • Students (3)
  • Working (4)
  • Labours (under Graduates) (6)
  • Bus Staff (3)
  • Senior Citizens (3)

Affinity Diagram

We created an affinity diagram as soon as we got enough interview data and observations. Then we took close look at all the responses of each interview and created the activity notes based on what they had said. We categorized the notes into different clusters and related themes that we identified from the interview data we collected.

Time is Money... Money is an absolutely money
No information is frustrating... know information is calming

User Experience Goals

"Interface design should focused on emergent users"

"Reduce dependency on type only search"

"A daily working commuter should be able to judge the crowd level in upcoming buses"

Wireframe

We decided to focus on 3 major user goals to build our prototypes. We focused on metaphoric and more user-centric design rather than giving a lot of features and functions, we decided to provide apt pieces of information in minimum screens and in fewer clicks as our most of the users are senior citizens, labors, and emergents users too

User Testing

Based on existing click-through mockups (shown above), We did user testing with 5 people and asked them to complete the task as follows

Key Questions

Is a first time user able to use voice assistance?

Is the user able to decide the level of crowd in the bus?

Tasks

Voice search to know the timing of the next bus.

Select a bus to travel to Churchgate

UT Findings

Bus routine & next stop screen is confusing.
